Ground Effects Package | Car spoilers: what is their function? The purpose of car spoilers is to increase the grip of the car on the road. Without a car spoiler, the only thing keeping the tires on the road is the weight of the car. Grip can be increased by increasing the weight of the car, but after a certain point this becomes a handicap in making turns, due to inertia. Here is where car spoilers can help: by acting like an airplane wing (but upside down), the spoiler can generate so-called down force on the car's body. The advantages are that a car can be made relatively light in weight and still stick to the road. However, this is achieved at the expense of extra drag, caused each time that a car spoiler generates down force. Drag is the term for the resistance of the air against the car's motion through it, and it tends to slow down the car. So the optimum balance must be found between too little down force and too much drag. This is a highly technical aspect of car design, and involves designing a car spoiler that will strike exactly the right balance between the two forces. So far from being merely cosmetic, car spoilers are in fact a vital performance accessory. |
