Lock Box System | Trailer hitches including Valley hitches, and other truck hitch accessories for towing Naturally, all trailer hitches really come into their own when you need to use your truck for towing. A trailer hitch needs to be completely reliable, because you've got to be able to trust it. Luckily, Armor Deck has the very best trailer hitches available for your vehicle! Points to consider when using a trailer hitch Hitch accessories need to be used with care when you're towing a heavy load. Each time you use it, it's a good idea to check the ball of your towing hitch: is it tight enough? Is the hitch coupler locked satisfactorily? Are your trailer safety chains fixed securely enough to the truck? And don't forget to check the load: make sure it's strapped down good and tight, and remember you may need to re-tighten the straps after the first few miles. Of course, there are all the general safety checks to make as well: check the tire pressure (you may need extra pressure for the rear tires), check that the trailer lights are operational, check the wheel bearings at least annually, and of course, check the trailer brakes. You don't want to find out the hard way that they don't work, when you've rigged up a trailer hitch and you're underway! Types of towing hitches for trucks There are five basic types of trailer hitches for towing: - Weight carrying hitches are fixed to the frame of your truck. They support the entire trailer weight, so they are best suited to a load of small to medium weight.
- Weight distributing hitches are best for heavy loads. As the name implies, they distribute the load among the truck and trailer wheels, leading to improved steering and braking.
- Bumper hitches (also known as frame hitches) are suitable for light towing, but unfortunately it can reduce or nullify the energy-absorbing properties of most modern bumpers. The bumper-mount hitch is a similarly undesirable hitch accessory, since bumpers nowadays are not designed with towing in mind. It is better to use one of the other trailer hitches.
- Receiver hitches have a removable ball mount when not in use. Receiver hitches are the most popular style of trailer hitch for trucks, SUV's and vans. A receiver hitch can also be installed on the front of your vehicle, for use with a boat.
- Gooseneck hitches (fifth wheel hitches): These hitch accessories are special hitches that are mounted through the truck's bed on to brackets or to the truck's frame.
Clearly, there are a wide range of trailer hitches available. At Armor Deck, we can supply you with any type of trailer hitches to meet your precise requirements. |
