For using tie-downs on lighter cargo and accessing it frequently, cam-buckle style nylon straps are your best bet. They have a definite speed advantage over ratchet straps. Ratchet straps are the top dogs of tie-downs, however. They offer the most holding power and are easy to use, versatile, and long-lasting. Ratcheting tie-downs allow you to apply more tension than pulling on a rope or cam-buckle strap. Another option for securing your loads are cargo nets and webs that can cover an entire load. They're available in a number of configurations, including webs made of bungee cords and nets made of nylon.

It's important to note that tie-downs are only as strong as the points they're hooked to. Anchor points and tie-down hooks are very important to protecting and securing your cargo.

Factory-installed anchor points are located near the bed floor where they can help haulers exert the greatest mechanical advantage. These are common in late-model trucks. For added flexibility, and out of necessity with older trucks, there are several tie-down hooks and anchor points designed to be installed in the top of a truck's stakepocket without drilling. There are even some types that retract into the stakepocket when not in use, leaving the bedrail almost flat.
